What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is ancient art of therapy that originated in China 5,000 years ago and has been used by nearly one-third of the world (Asia, Europe and South America, and more) as a primary care system for non-conventional therapy for 200 years. As type of complementary and alternative medicine, it was introduced in the U.S. in the 70’s and was then endorsed by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH).This therapeutic method treats the patient as a whole by rebalancing the body through the primary use of needles as stimulations with minimal invasiveness. How does acupuncture work? Acupuncture works based on the theory of meridians (a system of channels in the body) in which Qi (pronounced "chee"), or vital energy, and blood circulate, connecting the internal organs with external organs and tissues. By stimulating certain points of the body (called acupoints), the flow of Qi and blood is be regulated and diseases can be treated with very few side effects.

What are some common methods and treatments used to perform acupuncture?
Some of the most common acupuncture methods include but are not limited to:
Acupuncture Needles - Tiny, disposable, sterile needles placed gently into specific acupuncture points
Electro-Acupuncture - Acupuncture points are stimulated using a safe and gentle electrical current
Cupping - Using glass or bamboo cups to create a vacuum in order to increase warmth and circulation
Moxibustion - The dried leaf of mug wort is rolled into a stick or placed on the end of needles, then burned as a warming therapy during treatment
Ear Seeds - Acupoints in the ear may be stimulated for a longer period of time by using ear seeds. These seeds are held in place on the ear with a small piece of adhesive tape. Ear seeds may be left in the ear for a few days or up to two weeks.
Seven Star - Seven short, stainless steel needles are attached vertically to a handle. Superficial tapping is particularly suitable to treat skin disease as well as disorders of the nervous system.

What do the needles feel like?
You may feel a small prick as the sterile disposable needle passes through the skin. However, the needles are as fine as a human hair and many patients do not feel any pain at all. There may be a sensation of heaviness, numbness, a slight dull ache or a twitch which mostly indicates that the Qi has arrived at the acupoint called De Qi ("der chee"). Very rarely will you feel sharp pain, but if you do, you need to inform your acupuncturist so that an adjustment can be made.
How soon will I notice results?
Some patients notice partial or even complete relief as soon as the needle is inserted. Most find that improvement takes longer to appear - sometimes later that same day, or perhaps up to two or three days. If you do not notice improvement, you may not be responsive to this particular form of treatment and adjustment may be necessary.
You may find that the effects of treatment vary from time to time. You may notice more improvement in some visits compared to others.
